How long is each swimming lesson?

Artquaswim swimming lessons are 55 minutes, almost double the duration of most community center programs (typically 25–30 minutes).

All lessons are 55 minutes at both our North Vancouver and Vancouver West locations.

Longer lessons mean more practice time, better repetition, and stronger muscle memory for growing swimmers.

Are Artquaswim pools heated? What temperature are the pools?

Yes. Both Artquaswim locations feature indoor heated pools maintained at 29–30°C (84–86°F), with indoor air temperatures kept between 26–28°C (79–82°F). This makes our pools ideal for swimming year-round, including throughout the winter.

The warm water helps swimmers feel comfortable and confident, reduces fear of the water, and allows them to focus on learning new skills without getting cold. Many families especially appreciate the consistent temperature during Vancouver’s colder months.

Is there parking at North Vancouver (Bodwell)?

Please do not park in the front parking area of the school.

Ages & Levels

How do I find my kid’s swim level?

At Artquaswim in Vancouver, we follow the Lifesaving Society (Canada) swim level system to help families select the appropriate level.

Children ages 3–5 typically start in Preschool Levels 1–5, while swimmers aged 6 and older usually begin in Swimmer 1 unless they have previous swimming experience.

The easiest way to confirm the correct swim level is to message our team. We consider age, water comfort, and previous lessons. A level assessment is also completed during the first class to ensure proper placement for both safety and progress.

What ages can join Artquaswim Swim School?

All swimmers age 3 and above are welcome at Artquaswim. We follow the Lifesaving Society Canada program for youth swimmers.

North Vancouver (Bodwell High School)

Ages 3–16 may join our kids’ swim program. Swimmers 16+ may join our Teen & Adult lessons.

Vancouver West (JCC)

Ages 3–16 can only join our kids’ swim program (Preschool Levels 1–5 and Swimmer Levels 1–9) at the JCC.

⚠ Teen & Adult lessons are not offered at the JCC.

What programs do you offer for kids ages 3–16?

Our core programs follow the Lifesaving Society Canada swim level system and are designed for swimmers aged 3–16. We offer group, semi-private, and private classes.

Preschool Levels 1–5

For younger swimmers building water confidence and basic water skills in a fun, supportive environment.

Swimmer Levels 1–6

For beginner to intermediate swimmers developing fundamental swimming skills, stroke basics, and water safety.

Swimmer Levels 7–9

Advanced levels including Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol, focusing on endurance, technique refinement, and lifesaving skills.

Do you offer lessons for children under 3 years old?

Our program is designed for swimmers aged 3–16, and parents do not enter the water during lessons.

Some swimmers may begin as early as 2.5 years old. Once your swimmer is closer to that age, we would be excited to welcome them!

My child has no swimming experience — can they join your classes?

Yes! Many swimmers begin with no prior experience. Our coaches specialize in working with beginners and first-time swimmers, helping them build confidence safely and at their own pace.

When is the best time for my child to start swimming lessons?

The earlier children begin, the easier it is for them to learn proper technique and build healthy muscle memory.

What curriculum system does Artquaswim use?

We follow the Lifesaving Society Canada swimming program system.

Our curriculum is designed and led by Principal Coach Juliana, who has over 25 years of coaching experience and is both a National Champion and an NCCP-certified coach. She ensures every class meets Lifesaving Society Canada standards, so each swimmer's progress is fully recognized across Canada.

Artquaswim also uses a Dual-Coach System, inspired by high-performance and Olympic-level training structures, providing consistent technique correction and a safer, more supported learning environment for every swimmer.

My child learned in a different system. Can they transition into your levels?

Yes. Swimmers from other programs are assessed during the first lesson to ensure accurate level placement.

Class Types & Progress

Who designs and oversees Artquaswim lessons?

All Artquaswim lessons are designed and overseen by Principal Coach Juliana, a former National Champion and NCCP-certified coach with over 25 years of coaching experience. She leads and supervises our certified coaching team and remains actively involved on deck to ensure consistent technique standards, swimmer safety, and professional instruction across all programs.

As someone who believes water safety is a fundamental life skill, not a privilege, Juliana introduced the Essential Program as a way to give back to the community. After witnessing the long waitlists at public facilities, she was committed to creating a structured pathway that would make high-quality swim education more accessible to families — while maintaining the same curriculum standards and emphasis on proper technique.

What is the difference between the Essential and Elite Group?

Essential Class (8 students)less progressive, more fun.
Elite Class (4 students)faster progress, more care.

Essential Group

Essential Group: Up to 8 students, supported by a 3-coach team (Principal coach on the deck, Certified Coach and Assisitant Coach in the water). Designed to build confidence, enjoyment, and social learning in a structured group environment.

Elite Group

Elite Group: Up to 4 students, taught using our dual-coach system (Principal coach on the deck, Certified Coach in the water). Elite (and Private) students typically level up about 12 lessons with more hands-on technique correction and more direct learning time with the coach, leading to faster progress.

What is the difference between the Elite Group and Private Lesson?

Elite & Private students typically level up about 12 lessons. The main difference is class size, level of individual attention, and learning focus.

Elite is small-group training with fast progress, while Private is fully customized 1-on-1 coaching for the most focused correction and fastest improvement. If your child learns well in a group and enjoys swimming with classmates, Elite is a great choice. If your child needs maximum attention, faster results, or has specific technique goals, Private is the best option.

Who are Semi-Private lessons best suited for?

Semi-Private lessons are designed for swimmers who want closer coaching attention while still learning alongside familiar swimmers. Families typically form their own group, creating a focused and productive learning environment.

Child Semi-Private Lessons

Designed for children who benefit from closer coaching attention while learning alongside familiar swimmers. Families typically form their own group with a friend, sibling, or family member of a similar level, supporting a focused and productive learning environment.

Adult Semi-Private Lessons

Ideal for adults who prefer to train with friends or family members, or alongside their child (Swimmer Level 1 and above). Participants typically form their own group, allowing swimmers to learn in a familiar setting while receiving individualized coaching in a professional environment.

How fast can swimmers improve?

Most swimmers show progress quickly. In our program, over 98% of students level up in about 12 lessons (depending on attendance consistency, starting level, and comfort in the water).

Elite and Private students often improve faster thanks to more hands-on technique correction and individualized coaching. With our Progress Guarantee, swimmers can continue learning at no extra cost until they level up.

Should my child start with group lessons or private lessons?

Beginner swimmers often learn best in group settings, where lessons are fun, motivating, and feel less pressured.

Private or semi-private lessons are ideal for swimmers seeking faster progress, advanced technique refinement, or competitive preparation, as they offer more individualized attention.

Can siblings take lessons at the same time?

Yes. Siblings can join lessons at the same time subject to availability and appropriate level placement.

We also offer Semi-Private lessons (2–3 swimmers with a 2-coach team), which allow siblings or friends to be grouped together for more personalized coaching while learning side by side.

What happens if my child joins in the middle of the semester?

No worries. Your child can join at any time during the semester. At Artquaswim, progress is based on skill development, not the calendar, so starting mid-semester does not put your child “behind.”

Our lessons follow a structured and repetitive teaching method, which helps new swimmers adapt quickly and build strong muscle memory. Coaches will also support your child during the first class to ensure they are placed safely and appropriately.

If your child is ready, we can also conduct a level assessment to see whether they can advance to the next level. In fact, we’ve had many cases where students level up in the middle of the semester after showing strong skills and consistent progress.

Every child progresses at their own pace, and it’s completely normal for some swimmers to take a little more time. With consistent practice, around 98% of our students level up within about 12 sessions.

What if my child stopped swimming for a long time?

Skills fade without practice. We rebuild confidence and technique through structured repetition and consistency.

Can Artquaswim help my child get into a swim club?

Yes. Artquaswim can help prepare your child for future swim club training. While we are a swim school (not a competitive club), our coaching system focuses heavily on stroke correction, technique efficiency, endurance building, and water confidence, which are key foundations swim clubs look for.

Many families choose Artquaswim as a pre-club pathway so their child can build clean technique and correct habits before joining a competitive program. This often results in smoother transitions and faster improvement.

One of our students improved their time by 7 seconds after focused technique correction from our coaching team. And successfully qualified for a local swim club.

As an adult, how many lessons will I need to learn to swim?

It varies. Some adults swim 10m after 4 lessons; others need 10–15. A trial class helps determine your pace and goals.
